ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity Don’t Search the Same Internet

When an assistant looks something up, it searches an index someone else built: Bing, Brave, Google or its own. Why being findable on Google alone is no longer the whole job.

Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the same question about a business in George Town and you will often get four different answers. Some of that is the models writing differently. A lot of it is something more concrete: when an assistant looks something up, it does not search “the internet”. It searches an index that somebody built, and the four of them do not use the same one.

For a business that has spent years making sure Google can find it, that is an uncomfortable idea. Being findable on Google is still essential. It is just no longer the whole job.

Where each assistant looks things up

None of these companies publishes a full account of how its search works, and the arrangements change. This is what each has said publicly, or what has been documented, as of October 2026.

ChatGPT

OpenAI’s help pages on ChatGPT search say it rewrites your question into searches it sends to third-party search providers, naming Microsoft Bing, and it also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to build an index it can cite from. In practice: if Bing does not know your pages well, ChatGPT has less to work with.

Claude

When Anthropic launched web search for Claude in March 2025, it added Brave Search to its published list of subprocessors, and reporting at the time matched Claude’s cited results closely against Brave’s. Anthropic also runs its own search crawler, Claude-SearchBot. Brave builds its own index rather than renting Google’s or Bing’s, so it is a separate place your business needs to exist.

Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode

These are Google’s, and they draw on Google’s own index: the same crawl that decides your ordinary search results. This is the one most businesses are already set up for, often without knowing it.

Perplexity

Perplexity runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, and builds its own index to search from.

One caution about all of the above: each company can use several sources and change them without notice, and none says how much weight it gives to which. This tells you where to make sure you exist. It does not tell you how to win.

Why this matters more in the Cayman Islands

Search engines learn about a site mostly from being pointed at it: sitemaps it submits, and links from other sites. A small island means few local sites to link to you, so there are fewer routes by which any index can discover you. Google has had years of your Business Profile, your reviews and your Search Console data to lean on; the other indexes have had none of that. A Cayman business can be perfectly visible on Google and close to invisible everywhere else.

You can see this for yourself. Bing Webmaster Tools, which is free, shows how often Bing displays your site and which other sites it knows link to you. For many small local businesses the first look is sobering: a fraction of the impressions Google reports, and few or no known links. That is the index ChatGPT’s search leans on, telling you how well it knows you.

The visitors, when they do come, are worth having. Someone who arrives from an AI assistant usually asked a specific question and was pointed at a specific page as the answer. That tends to make for a more deliberate visit than a click from a list of ten results. Look for chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai among the referral sources in your own analytics, and compare how long those visitors stay with everyone else.

How to get into the indexes that are not Google

Bing: the easy win

Bing Webmaster Tools is free and can import your site straight from Google Search Console, so setup takes minutes if you already have Search Console. Once in:

  • Submit your sitemap, the file that lists your pages.
  • Turn on IndexNow, a protocol that lets your site tell Bing and other participating search engines the moment a page is added or changed, instead of waiting to be recrawled. Many WordPress SEO plugins support it, and some hosts switch it on for you.
  • Look at the Search Performance report now and then. It is the closest thing you have to a view of the index ChatGPT uses.

Brave and the others: the fundamentals

There is no Brave equivalent of Bing Webmaster Tools with the same depth, and the same is true of Perplexity. What gets you into those indexes is the unglamorous work that helps everywhere:

  • Let the search crawlers in. Check that your robots.txt and your hosting security settings are not turning them away. We covered the three things that quietly block AI assistants earlier this month.
  • Use plain HTML links. Pages linked only through JavaScript can go undiscovered by crawlers that do not run it.
  • Be mentioned by other sites. A listing in a trade or chamber directory, a local news mention, a client’s website crediting you. Every independent mention is another route in, for every index at once.
  • Say the same thing everywhere. Same business name, address, phone number and description on your site, your Google Business Profile, Facebook and every directory. An assistant that finds three different phone numbers has a reason not to mention you.

A test worth running once a month

Pick two or three questions a customer would genuinely ask. Not your business name: the question they would ask before they knew you existed, such as “who can fix a pool pump in West Bay” or “good place for a quiet dinner in Camana Bay”. Ask each assistant, and note who gets named and which sources each one links to.

Do not treat any single answer as a ranking. These answers change from session to session, with the wording of the question and with where the person asking is. What you are looking for is the pattern over a few months: which assistants ever mention you, and which sources they seem to trust for your kind of business. Those sources are where your effort should go.

Questions we get asked

Do I need to pay for Bing Ads to show up on Bing?

No. Ads and organic results are separate on Bing, as they are on Google. Webmaster Tools, a sitemap and IndexNow are free.

Which AI assistant matters most for a Cayman business?

There is no public data on which assistants people in Cayman use, and anyone who quotes you a local market share is guessing. The referral sources in your own analytics are the only local evidence you have: whichever assistants already send you visitors are the ones your customers use.

Is Brave really worth thinking about?

Brave on its own, for most Cayman businesses, probably not. Brave as the search source behind Claude is a different question, and the answer is the same work that gets you into every other index. You do not need a Brave strategy. You need to be crawlable and mentioned.

If I rank well on Google, am I covered for Gemini?

Largely, because they share Google’s index. Ranking well and being quoted are still not the same thing: an AI answer quotes the page that answers the question most clearly, which is not always the page ranked first. Our guide to Search Console’s AI report shows how to check which of your pages Google’s AI actually uses.

Where to start this week

Set up Bing Webmaster Tools by importing from Search Console, submit your sitemap and switch on IndexNow. It is under an hour, and it is the easiest step in this whole article to skip. Then run your two or three customer questions through ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and write down what comes back as your baseline.

Our free checker at toctoc.ky/seo-checker will tell you whether the AI crawlers can reach you and whether your business facts are machine-readable. If you want the whole picture handled, across Google, Bing and the assistants, that is what we do: AI search visibility for Cayman Islands businesses.
